a quick tip

eggshells

just a quick tip for today.

don't forget to save your eggshells for use in the garden. crushed eggshells provide a great source of calcium for your plants. tomatoes, in particular, love the extra calcium. the crushed eggshells also provide a deterrent to garden pests such as slugs. a win-win, right?

before using them, you need to bake the eggshells in the oven for about 10 minutes. let cool and then crush them around the base of your plants.

do you use eggshells in your garden? if not, give it a try.

  1. Oh, I love this tip! I put them in my compost bin, and uncomposted bits already end up in my garden, but I love the slug control factor. I am always looking for ways to deter them.

I will be giving this a try!

  3. lynette: i don't think it's absolutely necessary, after doing a little research but this is how i learned to do it from the farmer i work with.

  6. Shari: thanks. Sometimes all we need to know is that someone we knew did it this way and it worked. :)

  7. Does it help with slugs if you put them in the compost? Or does it need to be crushed and around the base of the plant?
